Tuesday 26th April
Today we were given our assignment brief for our factual programme.
Thursday 28th April
Today we were in Andy's lesson and we had a quick exercise to test our communication skills.
This is a blog to show my work and progress towards completing my Level 3 Creative Media BTEC course. It is a journal showing what I want to achieve and also evaluation of my work that I produce.

Week 6
Tuesday 5th April
Today we had Harry, and it was a workshop day. This meant that we all focused on our own work and did not get any talk from Harry. I wanted to finalise my front cover by today, so I just got on and completed it, it meant that next lesson, I could carry on with the more important work such as finishing my double page spread and contents, as well as the theory side of the work.
Thursday 7th April
Today we had Andy, and before we could start any work, we had to undertake an Action Plan for what we were to do this lesson. Below was my Action Plan:
9:15 - 9:30 Listen to Andy
9:30 - 10:30 Finish contents page
10:30 - 11:00 Break
11:00 - 12:15 Start double page spread
12:15 - 1:15 Lunch - take pictures for double page spread
1:15 - 1:45 Finish double page spread
1:45 - 3:15 Find and complete as much paperwork as possible
I actually stuck to the Action Plan and completed all of the things on time or even before the time. It went very well and I'm surprised I finished them all. Tomorrow is going to be a day of just paperwork!
Friday 8th April
Today was deadline day!
It went very well, and as I'm writing this, all I need to complete is my evaluation. I managed to get all my work done and printed off, the only issue was printing credit because I ended up spending so much! This assignment went very well, and it enabled me to focus more on my studies, as it was a very independent assignment.

Week 5
Tuesday 29th March
Today we had Harry and it was more of an independant lesson, where we all undertook our work and did not have much being discussed as a class, it was like a 'workshop' day. I wanted to spend the lesson starting all 3 of my pages (front cover, contents page, and double page spread) but ended up just starting my front cover and contents page. I created the layouts for both of them, and all I needed was photos for both pages and text for the double page spread. After lesson I went to Chichester town centre and took pictures of the Cathedral grounds for my front cover. I will hopefully upload the photo next lesson and hopefully complete my front cover. I still need to take pictures for my double page spread and contents page, but again I will hopefully do this next lesson.
Thursday 31st March
Friday 1st April
This morning we organised our gutters and columns on our double page spread. It was handy to know how to create them on Photoshop but seemed pretty pointless to most people as we had already started them and not included gutters. I had briefly created a layout without them but I could always re-start it because it was only brief and was not detailed or had any pictures on.

Week 4
Tuesday 22nd March
Today I had a 1:1 meeting with Harry so that I could find out more information about my client's needs and what he thought of my ideas. It was a great help as it helped me see what I needed to do and also what areas/topics I needed to change. As last lesson, I pitched my ideas, it meant that I did not have anymore paperwork to get on with this lesson. I extended my production schedule to include things such as creating my final product and also the deadlines for them. I need to create a mast-head and name of the magazine, come up with relevant images and create a QR barcode for my pages before next lesson.
The areas discussed in the meeting with Harry are below:
Today we had a group discussion about magazine front covers and the layouts. We looked at a Vibe magazine front cover with Eminem. We wrote and discussed the layout of it such as how Eminem was infront of the title of the magazine because it was a well-known magazine and it could be recognisable even with some of the title covered up. We also spoke about the background gradient and how we could create this on Photoshop. We noted that the colours were mainly reds, blacks, and silvers, because of the target audience of boys and spoke about how we need to come up with a colour scheme for our magazine.
[1]
The next magazine we looked at was called Amber. It was a gossip magazine aimed at a younger girls audience. You can tell this because of the colours that are used, such as purples, yellows and pinks. We spoke as a class about how different it was to the Vibe magazine, mentioning the colours, layout and detail. For example, on this magazine, as it is not as famous as the Vibe magazine, Jennifer love-hewitt is behind the title because if she was infront of it, people may not recognise the magazine. Things such as the price, was much more bigger probably because it is aiming to gain readers everytime whereas Vibe does not.
[2]
The final magazine we looked at was Kerrang! This was a music magazine with a different target audience to Vibe. This magazine appeared more 'in your face' than Vibe because the people reading it would more than likely be rock and roll listeners and grudge people. This has a powerful image of Green Day on the front cover which is also infront of the title as with Vibe magazine because of it's popularity and identity. We noted that the colours were whites, greens, blacks and yellows. Each colour was aiming to catch the audience's eye, and collectively they made everything look cluttered and messy.

Friday 25th March
Today we had Simon and we spoke about typography. We spoke about how each font would have a background to it, and a reason why and where it is used. I undertook primary researched in some fonts that appealed to me in Photoshop. I printed off 10 fonts that I liked, printed them off in 3 groups, a group of just upper case, a group of upper and lower case, and a group of just lower case. I then put them on an A3 sheet of paper, so that I could see them all together and find it easier to pick a favourite. I researched all the meanings of them and where they were used previously, I chose Century Gothic because it is used a lot in displaying information, and I thought this would be recognisable for readers.

The areas discussed in the meeting with Harry are below:
- Need name for magazine
- My front cover could include picture of students socialising in well-known Chichester places instead of my idea of a picture of the front of college.
- My contents page could contain images and topics that appeal to students, such as politics, cultural, role models, or university information.
- My text on my double page spread was going to be short and not too interlectual, but after discussing with Harry we decided that my target audience would rather read lengthy articles.
- Finally, we discussed that my double page spread would include places to go and clothes to wear for students. It would be a cross between fashion and lifestyle of students. I could even lay it out as if it is a daily routine.

Week 3
Tuesday 15th March
Today Harry briefed us with ideas for what we could include in our pitch. He mentioned about moodboards, initial ideas, detailed target audience, market research of content, copyright, questionnaires to content and constraints. I took notes in my notepad, and then I added to my production schedule areas that I had missed off. I began my powerpoint presentation and created 4 opening slides using information I have already collected. I then filled out the other slides with areas I need to look at so I can complete them on Thursday.
Thursday 17th March
Today was my final day for completing my presentation as tomorrow I have to pitch and will not have any time for last minute changes. I completed all slides as I had done homework on Wednesday and was able to do research. I had also sketched out and wrote what was to be included in each slide, so that today all I had to do was write it up on Microsoft Powerpoint.
Friday 18th March
Today I pitched my idea to the class of about 40. Many were absent and there was about 20 from our class and 20 from the other class. I thought I would be unconfident as I would not know half of the class but I think I done really well. I thought I was confident and addressed the audience well, and thought the content was okay. I would like to find out my mark from the lecturers so that I could see where I can improve for my next pitch.

Week 2
Tuesday 8th March
Our production schedule that we created last week came into use this week. I used it to let me know when I need to complete certain tasks and also use it as a checklist. I researched existing magazines and wrote down some names of some so that I could use them in my pitch later on next week.
Thursday 10th March
This lesson, I created a moodboard on my feelings and things that would be useful for my magazine. I made sure that I did not spend too long on it as it would waste valuable time. I then scanned it onto Adobe Photoshop and edited it, changing the contrast, brightness and adding other pictures to it.
Friday 11th March
Today I analysed a page out of an Empire magazine. I noted down all conventions that I knew was included on the page from my previous knowledge of magazine analysis from last year's media studies. I worked with Rebecca Turner and we found that our page was different to the pages from another magazine. The guidelines such as columns were different to what we expected, and they were not all of equal size so it did not co-inside with what we learnt previously. I photocopied the page so we both had a copy and now we're preparing to work on our pitch which is next friday, so we won't be focusing as much on the digital graphics side of the work, more on the practical side.

Week 1
Tuesday 1st March
We started our project and Harry spoke to us about our briefs. We were given homework,to look at several briefs that Harry provided to us. We had to analyize the briefs, depict them and write a report about them.
Thursday 3rd March
I handed in my homework from Harry's lesson to Andy. I thought it went well because I could easily understand the briefs. In class, we spoke about creating a production schedule for our work that we will start to produce next week. We were told that we were going to undertake the ASH brief which required us to create a magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread for students.
Friday 4th March
Today we had to research Vector and Raster graphics. I took some notes on the tasks that we were set and then went straight on to the internet to search for relevant websites. I managed to collect six pages of notes and a vast amount of websites. This will prove helpful when I come to write up my report later on today.

Week 3-8
Week 3
This week we assigned each individual in our group main roles. As Melissa had decided to leave the course we are now down to only 3 members. This means that we each have to undertake more work. Below is what we came up with:
Rob - Script, Shooting Scedule, Treatment, Proposal, Resources & Budget.
Callum - Client and Audience needs, Techniques, Storyboard, Shooting Script, Target Audience.
Jack - Contingency Plan, Similar/Existing products, Risk assessment, Legal considerations, Call sheet.
By the end of the week we have only 4 out of the 15 assignments left to complete, which shows how well our team is working together.

Week 4
This week was a successful week. We each knew what we were doing and therefore did not need to waste time not doing anything. We each talked through more ideas for the advertisement, trying to picture how we would shoot it. I finished my script and also shooting schedule. I had to complete the proposal by myself because the other two people left my lesson without letting me know. This meant I now had an extra assignment to complete. Next week we should be near finishing all the assignments.
Week 5
This week was an unsuccessful week because we were forced to change our idea completely. Jack had not secured the resources in time for filming therefore we were forced to come up with easier ideas in easier places. We had to change our advertisement locations to involve more of the college.
Week 6
We filmed the footage of our new idea for our advertisement. Not much to talk about this week, as everything went well.
Week 7
We edited our footage individually.
Week 8
We finished the assignment, completed the evaluation and handed in all the work.

Week 2
This week we chose what advertisement to research and also got put in a group four our actual assignment.
I chose to look at Diet-Coke as I thought it would be an interesting product to look at and design an advertisement for. I began by looking at the Diet-Coke website so I could familiarise myself with the brand and it's products. I researched into existing advertisements and how Diet-Coke had portrayed the brand and product themselves. I saw and noted that the company usually played background music instead of dialogue.
[1]
When I researched the product I began to come up with ideas for an advertisement. I wanted to keep the similarity of the exisiting advertisements but at the same time provide a sense of individuality.
Below is my treatment:
The advertisement will be based upon people’s daily lives and the impact that Diet Coke has to them and others around them. The emphasis will be on the change that they feel when they drink the Diet Coke.
The advertisement will start with shots of a city skyline at night-time showing all the diversity within the people and events. The shot will introduce the music of the advertisement which will be a song from a famous artist but not yet a famous song – so people do not lose interest. Once this shot is over there will be several faster shorter shots of individual people – showing their night. The purpose of this is to create a beginning of a story that the audience watching can see develop throughout the advertisement. The people will be enjoying a night out and all will then seek ways to make their night more adventurous or to get that ‘extra sparkle’, which leads to the introduction of the product, Diet-Coke. The soundtrack continues to play.
The camera will zoom in to the Diet-Coke and the people purchasing it from behind a counter/bar. There will be a slight sparkle around and in the can/bottle/glass, which is to signify the magic that the drink brings.
When the characters drink the Diet-Coke the room lights up with sparkle – to show the change that the drink has brought to the night.
There will then be various shots that have changed since start of the night and the camera will zoom out to show the skyline (which has now got more sparkle to it).
The final shot will show the product on screen with a slogan related to the impact and the magical sparkle that was around the product earlier in the advertisement.
The advertisement will cost approximately £50
After we had researched, we were put into our groups. I am in a group with Callum Young, Jack Waddup and Melissa Palmer. We were told the first that we do when we were put into our groups is to pitch our ideas and choose the best one to put forward. As Melissa was absent in this lesson, the rest of us pitched our ideas and chose among us to take my idea forward. We then had our first meeting as a group and assigned me as the chair-person and Callum as the minutes writer for the first meeting. We discussed many topics but the main idea was choosing where we could develop the chosen idea. We decided that the idea of taking a group of young adult's night out clubbing would prove too expensive and time consuming. So we decided to take some ideas from Callum's advertisement and join them into mine.
This was the final treatment we came up with:
Next week we plan to assign people roles and finalise the advertisement so we know what to do and when.
This was the final treatment we came up with:
The advertisement will be based upon people’s daily lives and the impact that Diet Coke has to them and how it keeps them going throughout the day. The emphasis will be on the different jobs and the different actions but still keeping the Diet-Coke present at these times and locations. There will be a constant theme linked with life and the different stages people could go through in the advertisement and this will link in with the slogan and the story.
The advertisement will start with shots of a city busy during the day time with a diversity of people. The shot will introduce the music of the advertisement which will be a song called “Keep Going” by Taio Cruz – We chose this because the advert aims to depict people in different jobs and they drink Diet-Coke to keep them going throughout the day. It will continue to play throughout the 30 seconds and will help tell the story.
Once this shot is over there will be several brief shots of people in different jobs ranging from nurses to students. The purpose of this is to show the Diet-Coke appearing frequently so that the audience watching can relate to some of them.
The camera will zoom in to the Diet-Coke and each individual drinking it to keep them going. There will be a slight emphasise around and on the can/bottle/glass, which is to make sure that the product stands out and looks the same in each scene. The final shot will show the product on screen with a slogan related to the impact and the emphasise that was around the product earlier in the advertisement. The slogan will be: Taste Life.
The advertisement will cost approximately £4, which includes free travel, free video recording equipment and the price of several Diet-Coke cans.
Next week we plan to assign people roles and finalise the advertisement so we know what to do and when.

Skills Profile - Filming
I do not have much experience when it comes to filming but I have used previous software that is used in photography. Both would be used in this topic and both for different things.
I have previously learnt about camera angles in media studies last year, and learnt about cinematography, editing, sound, techniques. I also went into depth in these areas learning about things such as Mise-en-Scene (everything in the frame/scene) and also jump-shots (where the camera jumps from shot to shot).
The software which may link to this assignment will be software such as Adobe Premiere and Adobe Photoshop. I have never used Premiere before but am advanced in Photoshop as I have been using it for two years now. I would like to find out about Premiere as it would be beneficial to know how to edit videos differently to Encore. Also knowing how to use Premiere would mean I have covered a vast area of editing software, from photos to videos and also how to create DVD menus. Which is all important when I want to work in the media industry.
